You can %26quot;opt out%26quot; of the pre screened applications. This will keep companies from sending you those pre-approved credit applications.

You can also place a fraud alert on your credit report if you have been a victim of identity theft. This will keep any new accounts from being opened up without first contacting you.

Both of the above items will not cost you anything to do.

If you have not been a victim of identity theft some states do allow you to place a freeze on your account. The fee varies by state.

However, this does not(and can not) stop companies that already have a pre-existing relationship with you.

You pay to put a credit freeze on the account.

You pay to lift the freeze as well.

When you apply for credit, you must allow enough time to lift the freeze before they try to check on it.
